Hinalea Introduces Extended SWIR Camera

June 26, 2023 (Emeryville, CA) – Hinalea Imaging has added a new hyperspectral camera to its award-winning family. The Model 4455 is an Extended SWIR camera that covers the 1200-2100 nm spectral range, making it useful for the detection and classification of chemicals and other materials that remain unseen with near-infrared (NIR) or typical shortwave-infrared (SWIR) systems. The Model 4455 is designed to image 225 spectral bands at a resolution of approximately 15 nm (FWHM).

The Model 4455 joins the growing Hinalea lineup, which now includes cameras from UV to XSWIR. “At, Hinalea, we see things differently,” said CTO Alexandre Fong. “Our cameras use proprietary Fabry-Perot technology that can capture a complete high-resolution datacube across the Extended SWIR spectral range in seconds, and without the unwanted image uniformity challenges seen with other technologies.” Cameras can be programmed to scan a subset of bands between 1200 and 2100 nm. The ability to dynamically control the sensor based on the application and object to be imaged optimizes data capture and data-processing efficiency.

The Model 4455 XSWIR camera can be ordered now for shipments commencing later in 2023. A data sheet for this product can be downloaded here.

Hinalea Imaging to Investigate Prognostic Value of “COVID-19 Rash” Using Advanced Hyperspectral Imaging

EMERYVILLE, CALIFORNIA ─ June 4, 2020 — Hinalea Imaging, a leading international solutions provider of hyperspectral imaging technology, announced today that they have entered into a research program to investigate the prognostic value of skin findings associated with COVID-19 infection, using Hinalea’s advanced hyperspectral imaging system.

COVID-19 infection has been associated with a variety of rashes, some of which resemble frostbite and have been referred to as ‘COVID toes.’ Frostbite is an ischemic phenomenon, caused by lack of blood supply to the digits for a prolonged period of time. Whether these rashes are in fact ischemic remains to be determined, due to the paucity of data from biopsy and other invasive assessments. COVID-19 patients have also been observed to deteriorate abruptly approximately one week after the onset of symptoms due to severe, widespread clotting within the blood vessels. Any relationship between ischemic-appearing skin findings and this ischemic cause of multi-organ failure remains unknown. Yet another complication of COVID-19 infection that could result in rashes as well as widespread ischemia is vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels). Due to the invasive nature of biopsies and the rapidity with which death occurs in fulminant cases, hyperspectral imaging may provide a more effective way to assess rashes for ischemia and help differentiate dysfunctional clotting from vasculitis, which may benefit from different treatments.

The program seeks to develop a non-invasive and rapid method to assess skin findings for ischemia; categorize rashes based on spectral signatures; and correlate different rash subtypes with clinical outcomes.

Principal investigator Dr Raja Srinivasan, Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said, “Hyperspectral imaging is a wonderful tool for analyzing COVID-19 rashes. It combines the power of spectroscopy with digital imaging to identify subtle wavelength differences that are not observable by the human eye.” Continued Dr. Srinivasan, “The high spectral and spatial resolution achievable with the Hinalea imager will hopefully provide a calibrated and reproducible method for assessing rashes across a wide range of skin pigmentation. The identification of spectral signatures that correlate with different pathologic mechanisms would further demonstrate the value of hyperspectral imaging as a tool for virtual biopsy, providing key information for medical decision-making without the invasive and time-consuming nature of traditional tissue biopsy.”

The project will start in June 2020 at two designated hospitals in Maryland and New York. Data will be collected from up to 200 critically-ill COVID-19 patients.

“Imager portability and ease of use is extremely important for this program because the data will be collected in a busy, time- and space-constrained clinical environment ” said Alex Fong, Vice President of Engineering at Hinalea. “In a truly transformative development, Hinalea has developed the only hand-held hyperspectral imager in the world that is capable of contact measurement. For the user, it is as easy as point-and-click.”

Thousands of scientists, engineers, and executives will convene at the most comprehensive technical conference and exhibition spanning biophotonics for brain research and healthcare, lasers for research and advanced manufacturing, sensors and camera systems, imaging and displays, communications and optoelectronics, plus the core optical components that enable many of today’s consumer products.

At Booth #65, visitors will have the opportunity to learn how the world’s first affordable, high-resolution, handheld autonomous hyperspectral camera can be utilized to solve many of today’s medical imaging, machine vision and quality inspection industry challenges. TruTag Technologies Model 4100 is a rugged, handheld instrument with a built-in illumination source. Ideal for field and factory use, it captures a 2D snapshot image of an object, and the spectra at each pixel in the visible from 450 to 850 nm in up to 400 bands in 1 nm steps. Users can pan and zoom the image via the color touch screen display and even view a video of the entire hypercube. TruTag’s hyperspectral imager is the first device to both capture and process a full multi-megapixel hyperspectral datacube without the need for external processing. It dramatically improves upon existing multispectral imagers, which trade off spectral resolution for spatial resolution. A visible-near IR (450 to 1,100 nm) version will be available shortly.

TruTag will also exhibit at SPIE Photonics West BiOS Booth #8343 which takes place January 27-28 in the Moscone Center’s West Hall.
